Getting Ahead: Building Bonds Beyond the Classroom

A follow-up home visit with a TANF client who recently completed the night class of Getting Ahead revealed just how transformative this program can be. When asked about her experience, she shared that the class made a significant impact on her life, far beyond what she expected. “The night class was special, and we truly bonded,” she explained. This wasn’t just about learning new information – it was about creating a supportive community. She appreciated that the class wasn’t merely a lecture on spending habits; it was a collaborative, immersive experience where the instructor, Noami Guy, was a part of the group, offering guidance in a down-to-earth and approachable manner. Noami’s responsiveness in providing information further enriched the experience, as did hearing everyone’s input on the various topics.

What stood out the most for her was the strong support network that formed among the participants. She shared that the group still talks weekly, if not more. When one member is struggling or needs advice, they connect through group chats and calls, providing each other with emotional support and practical solutions. One particular story highlighted how the group came together to support a struggling member by meeting at night to walk and talk through the situation, offering different perspectives and encouragement.

Initially, she joined the class to gain a better understanding of financial choices and the poverty cycle. However, she walked away with much more – a network of friends who support each other not only in financial decisions but also in mental health and personal growth. The impact of this class has extended to every area of her life, and she is profoundly grateful for the opportunity.

The Gulf Coast Partnership offers this impactful 10-week course called Getting Ahead, which focuses on financial literacy and much more. This story is a powerful reminder of the true value of the Getting Ahead program—creating lasting connections and support systems that help individuals thrive in all aspects of their lives.
